The words skifte and ændre can be synonymous, but there are some easy distinctions. Here’s a quick run down.

Skifte basically means to replace something with something else. Easy examples are changing the tyre on your car, changing your clothing, or switching trains at the next station. You are replacing one thing with another thing. 

 

Ændre, on the other hand, is more like modifying: at lave om på noget. So rather than replacing something, you are changing or modifying what is already there. Easy examples are changing a lifestyle, a law, or yourself.
